The AML/CTF Act has been in existence for almost four years, and the regulator AUSTRAC has been using a wide range of powers since early 2008 to drive home the message of compliance.  As with any large piece of legislation, ACI suggests that the euphoria of project development and learning a new subject has been replaced in many organisations by the trench warfare of implementation. Organisations are at risk of losing sight of the increasing need for positive activity across the anti-money laundering and terrorism financing space. Ongoing rule changes and new clarity of interpretation of specific issues by AUSTRAC means that AML/CTF officers and compliance officers cannot afford to relax.  Additionally, the closely linked issue of international sanctions continues to raise in threat profile, with tightening regimes against Iran and North Korean, plus a new Australian Bill, all demanding senior management attention.
